It has been all the self-taught moments in my life that have made me who I am today. It always seemed like other people had a better understanding of who I was than I did. My parents have always had high expectations for me, getting great grades and going to college. I am the person that never got in trouble, never lied, never did anything wrong. I never saw myself just like that. Growing up in this generation society puts a high expectation to over yourself. Social media is crazy when dealing with self-confidence. What kind of people do these Southerners think they are, enslaving innocent people and making them work for the rest of their lives, whipping fathers and mothers in front of their children, with the children knowing they couldnt do anything. Here I sit, writing once again, but this time not as a free man but as a prisoner. I have been captured during the Battle of Antietam. I can barely remember how I was brought into this dark and dirty prison, but I can still remember the way my men had fought.
Since I have nothing else to do, I can only tell you of my experience during the battle. After months of vigorous training, my men had wanted to fight in a major battle. And their prayers were finally answered. Their first real battle was the Battle of Antietam, truly the bloodiest battle that I have ever seen, which is probably the bloodiest in all of this countrys history. I can still remember how I saw thousands of Federal and Confederate troops fall to their deaths. That very day my small band of men had fought like 5, But when I had seen good men die, I felt rage consume my whole body. The battle started at dawn, near the town of Sharpsburg. My men and I had been allied with General Burnsides troops, trying to cross the bridge over Antietam Creek since about a.
But every time Georgians pushed us back. Finally I ordered my men to strike without mercy, as more Confederate and Federal troops engaged in battle. This finally broke their lines and drove them up the slope, giving us a better chance at winning. I finally decided to join the bloody battle, but when I said that I would run out and start attacking, my men thought that I was too important to them and that they couldnt afford me getting hurt. But that still didnt stop me. I had to win, it was my destiny. First I started shooting with a rifle and picked off a few Rebels, but saw that I needed more firepower. I came behind one canon and started firing at as many grouped up enemy units I could see, and saw that it had a more devastating effect.
Suddenly I saw a very important officer in the distance, it was General A. I quickly devised a risky strategy that could have really help the Union, if it worked. I took two of my hand- guns out of my belt and started running across the slope firing at all of the Rebels that I could see. This strategy let me take off about 15 to 20 Rebel units. The whole point of the strategy was for me to be a distraction while my men could destroy the Confederate flanks easily. When I ran out of ammunition I quickly ducked under a tipped hay wagon and started reloading. I quickly did this and shot about 10 more of the Rebels, but then I saw that I had completely run out of bullets. But luckily my men were gaining on the enemy and more cannons and rifles blasted at the dirty Confederates, trying to break them apart.
Then I thought to myself, why not take one more risk. This new idea of mine would be crazy and risky but it was my only chance. I picked up two sabers covered with blood, and was preparing to attack. This strategy was supposed to have the Rebels reload leaving them defenseless, except for their bayonets, and as they reloaded I would run through the crowd trying to make my way through with the sabers, as fast as I could, to quickly defeat the officer. But time was running out, and the crate was breaking up, with pieces of wood showering over my head, and cannon balls were getting closer to the wagon. I took the two sabers and started running at the enemy units with great speed, and with no fear.
I started slashing, slicing, and ripping as I ran through the crowds, leaving nothing but cut up skin, a trail of blood, and screams of agony behind me. Bullets pierced, and tore through my uniform but didnt hit me. Suddenly, two bullets had grazed my knee, and I fell in pain, dropping the two swords. One Rebel was about to stab me, and I had thought that this was the end of my life, but fortunately one of my men had shot him down. But my luck was short lived and I had blacked out. And that is it, that is how I remember the bloody Battle of Antietam.
And now I sit here, in this old and ugly stone prison, with a rag tightened around my left knee, what kind of a corporal am I, leaving his comrades without a leader. The strange thing is, is that the prison guards were actually kind in a way, and not as brutal as the Northern prisons.
